March 18, 2008   [E-mail Page]  [Print Page]

The Leaf personal light from Herman Miller, Inc., has been chosen among the world's best lighting products to receive a 2008 red dot award for product design. The LED (light emitting diode) table-top light was selected from thousands of entries by an international jury of 24 renowned designers and design experts.

Leaf is a result of collaborative engineering and design development between Herman Miller and Yves Behar's San Francisco-based studio, fuseproject. Its design allows the user to choose both the intensity and color of light. Additionally, Leaf's LEDs consume less than eight to nine watts of power, carry a lifespan of more than 60,000 hours at the full-power setting, and cut energy use by 40 percent compared to a 13-watt compact fluorescent bulb.

Leaf's intriguing design earned recognition from the jury for its degree of innovation, functionality, ergonomics, durability, and ecological soundness.

The red dot award originated in 1955 and has become one of the largest and most renowned design competitions worldwide. It consists of three categories, including product design, communication design, and design concepts.

Recipients of the red dot award will be celebrated in June 2008 at the Essen Opera House, the Aalto Theatre, and later displayed at the at the red dot museum in Essen, Germany.
