Yves Behar to Highlight Leaf at TERRA MATTER Symposium in New York
May 12, 2006   [E-mail Page]  [Print Page]

Yves Behar will discuss his inspiration for Leaf--an innovative and earth-friendly LED (light emitting diode) task light he designed with Herman Miller, Inc.--during Material ConneXion's TERRA MATTER: Inspire Innovate Sustain design symposium at the Equitable Auditorium in New York City on Friday, May 19. The light will be publicly introduced at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City from May 20-23.

The annual design symposium sponsored by Material ConneXion provides a platform for designers, architects and scientists to discuss the role of design and materials in the global effort to preserve natural resources and the environment.

"Yves is a natural fit for this symposium," says Michele Caniato, Executive Vice President at Material ConneXion. "His work demonstrates how sustainable materials can influence the design process."

Yves Behar and his San Francisco-based studio, fuseproject, together with Herman Miller's Design for the Environment team, sought the most sustainable materials and production methods for Leaf. It is composed of hydro-formed aluminum, utilizes energy-efficient LED technology and its organic form acts as a heat dissipation system.

Paul Murray, director of Environmental Affairs and Safety for Herman Miller, believes it is important to incorporate environmentally friendly materials early in the design process. "As a result, this enables us to develop smarter products with a smaller footprint," he says.
