Herman Miller's Mirra Chair, M Collection Earn Prestigious Design Award
Herman Miller, Inc., announced today that its popular Mirra chair, recently cited by Fortune magazine as one of the "Best Products of the Year" for 2003, and the M Collection, a line of height-adjustable work tables co-developed with Baker Manufacturing, have received the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design's GOOD DESIGN(TM) Award for 2003.
GOOD DESIGN is the oldest and among the most important design competitions worldwide. Edgar J. Kaufmann, Jr. established the museum's award program in Chicago in 1950 with the participation of several of America's modern design greats, including Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, Alexander Girard, and George Nelson.
As winning entries, both Mirra and the M Collection will be added to the Chicago Athenaeum's Permanent Design Collection.
Herman Miller introduced Mirra in 2003 to bring a new level of performance, ergonomic comfort, and a sophisticated-yet-playful aesthetic to the mid-market work seating category. The chair has generated significant interest and earned many accolades both within the design industry and among the general public.
"Mirra follows the Herman Miller mandate of fostering innovative design that is useful and productive in the workplace, and pleasing to the eye," said Wayne Baxter, senior product manager, Seating. "To be acknowledged by the Chicago Athenaeum is an honor and a validation of everything we have strived to accomplish in Mirra."
M Collection tables represent a simple, cost-effective solution to enhancing workplace ergonomics in order to promote employee comfort, health, and satisfaction. Each user can quickly and easily adjust an M Collection table to suit his or her size and posture preference, whether standing or sitting.
"I'm extremely pleased with the GOOD DESIGN acknowledgement," said designer Thomas J. Newhouse. "The M Collection is a very strong product that raises the bar on ergonomics. In keeping with my own values, it's also a very 'green' product, designed for easy disassembly, and it meets Herman Miller's requirements for cross-platform compatibility with its other office systems."
Mirra is available through Herman Miller dealers and select consumer and online stores.
The M Collection is available exclusively through Herman Miller dealers.
All GOOD DESIGN Award winners are posted on the museum's Web site.
