Chicago Museum Selects Herman Miller's Celle Chair for Exhibit Featuring William McDonough
April 06, 2006   [E-mail Page]  [Print Page]

The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry has selected the Celle chair from Herman Miller, Inc., to represent the influence of William McDonough, an architect and a champion of the environment featured in an exhibit entitled, "Leonardo da Vinci: Man, Inventor, Genius." The exhibit is scheduled to open on April 14, 2006.

McDonough is one of 40 contemporary innovators included in "Modern Day Leonardos," part of the exhibit dedicated to exploring the inventive spirit of the Renaissance icon.

He is the founding partner of William McDonough and Partners, an architectural firm specializing in environmentally intelligent design strategies, and the co-founder of the McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) Cradle to Cradle Design protocol, a product and process evaluation method created to determine the health effects and sustainability of materials and products.

Celle's dynamic structure stems from the influence of the MBDC Cradle to Cradle Design protocol and Herman Miller's Design for the Environment (DfE) methodology. The chair has 33 percent recycled content and is 99 percent recyclable. It can also be disassembled in fewer than five minutes using common hand tools.

Developed by Chicago-based designer Jerome Caruso, Celle's defining feature is Cellular Suspension, a new concept first proposed by Caruso, using pliable molded polymer "cells" and loops to responsively flex in concert with the body's movements throughout the workday.
