Herman Miller, Inc., has been recognized by the MIT Journal of Industrial Ecology for the implementation of its Design for the Environment (DfE) protocol. Design for the Next Generation: Incorporating Cradle-to-Cradle Design into Herman Miller Products highlights the development of the Mirra chair, the company's first product designed according to the rigorous standards.
Inspired by the Cradle-to-Cradle Design Protocol developed by William McDonough and Michael Braungart, Design for the Environment (DfE) emphasizes the safety of a product's material chemistry, the ease of its disassembly, and the percentage of recycled content in the product along with the recyclability of its parts.
Herman Miller DfE team members Gabe Wing and Scott Charon collaborated with Mark Rossi from Clean Production Action, and James Ewell from McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, to write the article that was published in the fall 2006 edition.
