Five graduate students from the Center for Health Systems & Design at Texas A&M University attended the 2007 International Health Facility Planning, Design and Construction conference from February 25-28 in San Antonio as Herman Miller for Healthcare traveling fellows.
As a corporate member of the Texas A&M Healthcare Industry Advisory Council (HIAC), the company is able to contribute its membership dues to fund traveling fellowships to national healthcare design conferences.
The program grants up to six travel fellowships to the annual International Health Planning, Design & Construction conference or the Center for Health Design/American Institute of Architects Health Design conference.
"It's an exciting way to get students involved in our industry," said Roger Call, director of Architecture and Design for Herman Miller for Healthcare. "The interest and enthusiasm we see from them is very rewarding."
To be considered for the program, first year master of architecture students must submit a resume and an essay about the value of professional networking. A jury then selects the top submissions. Recipients for 2007 include: Clayton Merritt, Jie Ao, Alejandro Iriarte, Ashley Dias, and Hyung-Jin Yoon.
"I'm absolutely delighted that Herman Miller for Healthcare created this exciting traveling fellowship for our master of architecture students," added Kirk Hamilton, associate professor of architecture and interim director of the Center for Health Systems and Design at Texas A&M. "We now can send several students each year to national conferences where they can learn about the profession, experience the vendors' exhibit hall, and meet practicing professionals who might become mentors and sometimes employers."
