A Work Chair Solution
High-performance, highly adjustable, and thickly cushioned seating in three sizes for long-term work; for computer and general office tasks as well as meetings.

Ergonomic Design
Thick cushions, deep contours. The chair looks and feels very comfortable.

Cradles the user. The sitting pocket naturally aligns the body in the most comfortable posture.

High backrest. This standard feature on all three chair sizes maintains the spine's natural curve and supports the upper back.

Easy on arms and legs. Soft edges and a waterfall seat front help maintain proper circulation.

Healthful Tilt
Easy motion. The knee-tilt mechanism lets the user move naturally between postures, from upright to reclined.

No pressure. When the user leans back, feet stay flat on the floor and the front edge of the seat doesn't rise.

Adjustable Support
The right fit. A full complement of easy-to-use adjustments lets the chair fit nearly everyone and support nearly every work activity.

Inviting Aesthetic
Comfortable appearance. Thick foam cushions and supportive contours create the look of essential ergonomic design.
Design Story

The Ergon 3 chair does not represent a radical redesign of the original Ergon models. Nor does it represent a departure from the ergonomic solutions provided by the Ergon and Ergon 2 chairs. Rather, the Ergon 3 chair incorporates refinements and enhancements to meet the needs of a changing workplace and work force.

Herman Miller introduced the Ergon chair in 1976 after designer Bill Stumpf conducted 10 years of research into how people really sit when they work. Stumpf's research focused on the following:

  • Consultations with orthopedic surgeons and cardiovascular specialists to understand the effects of chairs and the seated posture on the body's circulatory system, muscles, and bones.
  • Examination of the human behavior of sitting -- the motions, activities, and posture patterns of people performing various tasks.
  • Exploration of how work chairs can be designed to effectively support a wide range of body heights, weights, and shapes.

The Ergon chair revolutionized office seating because it was designed for both comfort and user health. The chair quickly and easily adjusted to various body sizes and proportions, and it reduced physiological stress by providing exceptional spinal support and unrestricted blood flow. For the first time, businesses could provide their workers with seating designed for the way they really sit -- not for the way someone thought they should sit. With the Ergon chair, Herman Miller established the reference point for comfortable, healthful, and visually appealing ergonomic seating.

In the years following the introduction of the Ergon chair, Stumpf and Herman Miller continued their research. As offices became computerized, there was an increasing need for chairs that provided comfortable and healthful support for task-intensive environments. As a result of their research, Herman Miller introduced Stumpf's Ergon 2 chair in 1988. The Ergon 2 chair featured refinements to support people who sit for long hours, especially at computer-related tasks.

Millions of satisfied customers around the world enjoy the extraordinary comfort and support of Ergon and Ergon 2 chairs. Today's workplace requires new work chair performance. The design criteria of the Ergon 3 chair respond to the greater variety of sizes and shapes in today's user population, as well as the greater variety of activities individuals perform in a day. Continuous customer evaluation and feedback regarding previous Ergon models also drove enhancements incorporated into the Ergon 3 chair. Emerging seating codes and standards were major influences as well. And, of course, the Ergon 3 chair benefits from Herman Miller's 30 years of continuous research into ergonomic seating and the people who work in offices.
