Nala by Brandrud / A Herman Miller Company Becomes First Cradle to Cradle Certified Patient Chair

October 28, 2008

Brandrud / A Herman Miller Company is celebrating the McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) Silver certification of Nala, its newest high-performance patient room seating solution. It is the only patient-centered chair designed and certified according to the MBDC's Cradle to Cradle protocol, a process used to assess and optimize materials used in products and production processes to maximize health, safety, effectiveness, and high quality reutilization.

Nala will be introduced at the Healthcare Design 08 conference, located at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington, D.C., November 8-11, 2008.

Leveraging the research, technologies and engineering applied to its ergonomic task chairs, Herman Miller for Healthcare collaborated with Brandrud and Boston-based Design Continuum to create a patient chair that provides the comfortable support and ergonomic principles and technologies first demonstrated in Herman Miller's industry-leading work chair designs.

"Designing Nala according to green principles was non-negotiable," said Kent Gawart, Herman Miller for Healthcare's vice president of Marketing and Project Services. "We believe a healing environment will be better served by a product both sensitive to its environmental footprint and the needs of patients and caregivers."

Nala's design was guided by Herman Miller's rigorous Design for the Environment protocol, emphasizing safe materials, recycled content and ease of disassembly. It is 86 percent recyclable and is made from 33 percent recycled materials. It also carries a 12-year warranty.
