Health Advocate Program

To help North American employees navigate the healthcare system, Herman Miller contracts with HealthAdvocate to provide personal assistance for insurance-related issues and more. A personal health advocate works with employees one-on-one to help untangle claims, correct billing errors, or get second opinions. One employee said, “I called the HealthAdvocate to assist with finding a new doctor. I had already spent hours looking on-line with no success, lots of confusion, and frustration only to find the doctors I called were not accepting new patients. I received an e-mail four days later from HealthAdvocate with four doctors that fit my criteria. It was an awesome experience.”

Carpooling/Bike Pooling Programs in the U.S.

Several programs help us reduce the amount of fuel we consume, thereby reducing the impact on our wallets as well as the environment. Employees also receive one-time reimbursements including $500 when purchasing a hybrid or fuel-efficient car, $100 when purchasing a bike for personal use (or $25 for a bike tune-up), and $50 toward an approved helmet for use when riding a motorcycle or scooter.

As of this fiscal year, our fuel savings initiatives have resulted in these savings since the program began in 2008:

474,997 miles saved by carpooling/biking 176 fuel efficient vehicle reimbursements 792 bicycle reimbursements$174,995 reimbursed to employees

Healthy You! Wellness Program

The Healthy You! Program allows Herman Miller employees to earn discounts on healthcare premiums through the completion of health risk assessments, free health screenings, and routine physicals. Eighty percent of our employees earn these healthcare premium discounts. Healthy You! challenges encourage behavior change through social networking, team activities, and games.

Safety

Safety

Our Corporate Safety Vision is that “Herman Miller will establish a culture where safety expectations are driven by all employees with the understanding that all injuries are preventable.” There is a consistent, verifiable, and ongoing identification and correction of problems and hazards.

Herman Miller’s West Michigan and Geiger (Georgia) sites achieved a multi-site certification for Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001. We found that this process confirmed and formalized our Occupational Health & Safety Management System with already existing objectives and targets.

Five of our facilities are recognized by the Michigan Voluntary Protection Program. In addition to our participation in the Michigan OSHA Voluntary Protection Program, our Behavioral-Based Safety (BBS) program helped us work toward our goals. We launched a corporate-wide BBS program in 2006. This innovative workplace strategy reduced on-the-job injuries by 40 percent in the first year.
