Airia desk by Herman Miller, Inc., Earns 2008 GOOD DESIGN Award

January 23, 2009

The Airia desk and media cabinet from Herman Miller's Lifework Portfolio have been honored by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Design and Architecture with a 2008 GOOD DESIGN Award in the Furniture category.

The Lifework Portfolio was introduced at the 2008 International Contemporary Furniture Fair as a response to the wide and growing variety of home-based tasks and work styles.

Designed by Kaiju Studios, the Airia desk and media cabinet reflect a balance of function and simplicity. The desk's elegant form and high-performance laminate top are enhanced by a walnut surround and a secondary surface, which may be used to display peripherals and free the work surface from clutter and cables.

The GOOD DESIGN jury of recognized architects, designers, and authorities in the design world based their decisions on aesthetic criteria stated in the original 1950 program by Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Edgar Kaufmann, Jr.,--criteria that measures innovation, form, materials, construction, concept, function, and utility.

GOOD DESIGN bestows international recognition upon designers and manufacturers for advancing new and innovative product concepts and for stretching the envelope beyond what is considered standard product and consumer design.
