Fourth Annual Student Video Contest Explores Environments Contributing to Student Success
What makes a learning space great? This year, Herman Miller, Inc., is asking full-time students attending two or four-year U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities to answer this question through its fourth annual Student Video Contest.
According to Herman Miller’s latest research study, as technology continues to replace textbook-driven courses with Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and structured lectures with collaborative conversations, it is becoming increasingly critical for campuses to future-proof the physical learning space, ensuring a transformative student experience and ultimately, future workplace achievement.
“Effective learning space design starts with a keen understanding of the people involved and the pedagogy taking place. We place a great deal of focus on listening to key stakeholders to learn more about what works – and what doesn’t – from the end-users who use learning spaces the most,” said Jeff Vredevoogd, Director of Herman Miller Education. “The contest encourages students to share their voice and showcase their creativity, while also capturing valuable insights that could be passed down to the next generation of learners.”
By answering the question “What Makes a Learning Space Great?” through Herman Miller’s Student Video Contest, students will have an opportunity to document elements contributing to a successful learning environment, such as collaboration stations and tech-friendly furnishings, while informing the future of learning space design.
“The idea behind the contest is that if you had three minutes with campus leaders to discuss your university’s learning spaces, what would you say?” added Vredevoogd.
Contest entries will be accepted until 5 p.m. EST on March 22, 2013. Representatives from Herman Miller will select three finalists whose submissions best represent creativity, originality, and appropriateness to the theme. A public vote will decide the final ranking for the top three submissions. The first place winner will be awarded $2500 cash, second place $1500, and third place $1000.
