Herman Miller Healthcare Earns Exclusive Planetree Visionary Design Network Status

October 4, 2012

Recognized for its long-standing commitment to improving the patient experience through the power of space, Herman Miller Healthcare, a division of Herman Miller, Inc., became the newest member of the esteemed Planetree Visionary Design Network (PVDN). The first manufacturer to be awarded this distinction, Herman Miller Healthcare accepted the honor at the Planetree Annual Conference on Wednesday, October 3.

A non-profit organization offering healthcare providers essential tools to transform organizational cultures, Planetree founded the PVDN in 2008 with the mission to enhance healing environments through a collaborative forum of design professionals who fully embrace Planetree’s patient-centered philosophy. By drawing upon members’ expertise, the PVDN seeks to design facilities that offer the greatest opportunity for care of the body, mind and spirit from the perspective of the patients, families and caregivers who use that space.

Under the Planetree Model of Care – which is committed to enhancing healthcare from the patient’s perspective – Herman Miller Healthcare will collaborate with the Network to inspire the creativity and design excellence of healing environments by helping to:

  • Develop a learning community amongst design professionals through the website and other media vehicles;
  • Provide design professionals with a forum to advance knowledge of the Planetree Model of Care;
  • Give affiliates, and future affiliates, a reference source and toolkit to help them best develop their projects in a truly patient-centered model.

“Aligned with the ideals of Planetree, our primary mission is to create solutions within the healthcare space that place patients and the care given to them at the forefront of our product and systems design. By incorporating the power of space throughout the continuum of care, we are able to create an environment that positively impacts how caregivers work and ultimately, how patients feel,” said Herman Miller Healthcare President Louise McDonald. “As a proud new member of the Planetree Visionary Design Network, we look forward to partnering with this organization that’s equally devoted to patient-focused care and creating spaces that do more for the people who use them.”

Herman Miller Healthcare joins an exclusive group of leaders serving as catalysts for change in healing design. Members are selected on the basis of their healthcare design expertise and ability to exhibit a healing environment within their own organizations through the integration of sustainable practices and staff-friendly working environments. Qualifying organizations are carefully assessed by Planetree Design Advisory Council representatives to measure their commitment to improving the path toward healing.
