Herman Miller Honored for Sustainable Performance and Community Commitment
September 16, 2011
Herman Miller, Inc. has once again been recognized as a leader in corporate sustainability and community involvement by both The Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World), and the state of Michigan's Neighborhood Environmental Partners Program (NEP). This marks the eighth consecutive year Herman Miller has been placed on the DJSI World and the third straight year earning an NEP award.
"These awards are a testament to our employees' great work," said Gabe Wing, Director of Environmental Health and Safety. "Herman Miller is committed to sustainable and responsible business practices in everything we do, whether in our local community or in the larger global footprint of our business."
DJSI World is an international stock portfolio that evaluates the annual performance of the world's largest 2500 companies using economic, environmental, and social criteria, known as the "triple bottom line" of sustainability. Herman Miller joins approximately 300 other companies, which represent the top 10% of leading sustainable companies worldwide. Herman Miller is the only contract office furniture manufacturer selected, and is now joined by U.S. based companies including Sprint Nextel Corp., Kohl's Corp, Xerox Corp, and AFLAC, Inc.
"The DJSI have become the gold standard in recognizing the world's corporate sustainability leaders," said Michael A. Petronella, President, Dow Jones Indexes. "These indexes have become an invaluable market tool for those seeking to support companies that are committed to creating and adopting sustainable business practices."
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) also honored Herman Miller with the NEP award, which recognizes organizations and their community partners that have developed outstanding, ongoing community outreach programs to improve the environment in their neighborhood. The NEP Program offers businesses and citizen groups the opportunity to work together to improve the quality of their neighborhood, allowing for a cleaner and more attractive area in which to live and work.
Herman Miller's community partners include the West Michigan Environmental Action Council, West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum, Habitat for Humanity, and several school districts in West Michigan.
