Herman Miller Select Program Announces Newest Edition

August 08, 2011

Herman Miller Inc. announced today that the Nelson Round Tray Table has been chosen as the 2011 Select Program offering and is immediately available for order. The limited-edition Select program began in 2008, providing customers a way to enrich their connection to the company's long history of iconic designs and their designers.

First introduced in 1961, The Round Tray Table exemplifies George Nelson's belief that objects should be "designed to meet fully the requirements of modern living." His statement is as true today as it was during his tenure as Herman Miller's design director. Intended to serve as a multipurpose table for use in the home or office, the trim and elegant round Tray Table was originally offered in a walnut or teak veneer with a chrome pedestal tube and black enamel two-section base. The table was discontinued in 1964.

The 2011 Select Edition reinterprets Nelson's design with a jewel-like inlaid tray top in a striking sunburst pattern. The pattern is inspired by Nelson's 1955 clock design, "Flock of Butterflies." The 2011 table surface, based on Nelson's bold clock face, comes in a white ash veneer and is finished with a special process that arrests the ash in its natural, "fresh-cut" state. The white ash also presents a receptive backdrop to the exquisite inlay pattern. The sunburst inlay is created by juxtaposing walnut and santos palisander veneers in each diamond shape. Five-ply veneer construction, with inner plies of bay poplar, ensures the top remains stable through changes in humidity and years of use. A brushed stainless steel column and black umber steel legs support the tray top.

The table stands 17 inches high; the tray top—as part of the table or tray only—is 18 inches in diameter. As with the original, the 2011 Edition is presented in a special take-home container similar in size to a pizza box, with simple assembly instructions.

Available as a complete table or top only, the Herman Miller Select Nelson Round Tray Table will be orderable through the company's authorized distributors at $699 for the table and $499 for the top only, and will be available until February 2012.
