Our Inclusiveness Resource Teams (IRTs) organize grassroots initiatives for the benefit our employees and communities, and help us meet business objectives. In the past year, IRTs grew to 12 teams with over 200 members worldwide.

In 2008, we began encouraging our employees to carpool and bike to work. Four years later, the program has resulted in 474,997 miles saved—the equivalent of 19 trips around the earth’s equator.

Every filing cabinet has a counterweight to prevent it from tipping over. In 2012, we discovered a way to make ours with the overspray left over from the powder-coating process. Recycling the powdercoat is an industry-wide problem, so we chose to share the innovation with our competitors.

Herman Miller employees transformed an overgrown plot of land into a fully functional sensory garden for Rise Children’s Centre. This U.K.-based family-support and outreach service works to give local kids the best possible start in life.

In 2012, we launched the Herman Miller Academy, a program for West Michigan students to see and experience career opportunities in manufacturing. More than 80 Herman Miller employees volunteer as presenters and mentors.

Our supply chain accounts for nearly 80 percent of Herman Miller’s total environmental impact—someday we want that to be zero. To get there, our core suppliers have committed to an ongoing reduction in their air emissions, landfill, process water use, energy, and hazardous waste.
