Learning Spaces Research Program

Testing New Approaches to Learning Spaces
Herman Miller has collaborated with several campuses across the country to measure the impact of a holistic change to campus learning spaces.
The Program is built on a new concept known as the Learning Studio. We work with Higher Education leadership to not only create new approaches to their learning spaces, but also conduct ongoing research that measures the impact of these spaces on learning.
A key advantage of the Program is that participating institutions have the opportunity to pilot new learning space concepts before making larger scale decisions about learning space design.
Throughout the Program, we work with participating institutions in a collaborative way—not only helping create innovative learning spaces, but also conducting research that yields results that can be acted upon.
Results that can be Applied Across Campus
Concepts and theory are important, but results are what really matters. Participating Institutions have seen the following benefits:
- Faculty are encouraged to test new forms of teaching methodologies and technologies, and incorporate new approaches to space into their pedagogical styles.
- Engagement has increased between faculty and students as well as students with other students, resulting in deeper, more effective learning experiences.
- Data and insights that are collected work to guide an institution toward more effective learning spaces in the future.
Among the Participating Institutions
- Butler Community College
- Central Michigan University
- University of Michigan
- University of Utah
