Leia,

According to Herman Miller Healthcare researcher Doug Bazuin, it is possible that a single chase wall per two patient rooms would use less material initially. However, our preference is for utilities to be mounted on the exterior of the wall for ease of change over time. Over the life cycle of the building we would propose that flexible, surface/exterior utilities are more sustainable and replace a chase wall with a traditional wall. Herman Miller's Compass system is an example of this.

Would you say mirror image rooms are more sustainable due to less materials and cost by cutting out the addition of a chase wall per patient room?

It's likely that for many people mirror image is easy to adapt to with a little practice. In Great Britain, people use their left hand to eat with even though the population is mostly right handed. If the health care providers aren't having trouble finding what they need when they need it, both the mirror and same-handed rooms seem like they would be equally easy to navigate. You're right, though, the people to ask are those actually working in that environment.
