Looking Back: Vintage Ads

By

For more than 30 years, George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames worked with Herman Miller to create iconic designs. While known for pieces like the Coconut chair, Marshmallow sofa, and molded plywood chairs, the truth is there was little these talented designers didn’t do.

From their respective offices in New York and Los Angeles, Nelson and the Eameses oversaw multidisciplinary firms that designed everything from exhibits to films to catalogs. The vintage print ads, above, are just a few examples of the graphic design contributions that defined the visual identity of the Herman Miller brand for decades.

Thanks a lot for sharing, any plans for reprinting these?

It’s something we’ve discussed. Is a reprint something you would be interested in?

I think these are cool. We bought a poster off e-bay a few weeks ago that was from the HMI European market. I can’t rembmer what it was promoting but it’s pretty cool.

These are stunning. I would definitely love to own these posters for my own.

Also chiming in for a reprint. I’d love a copy of that 1952 ad.

It’s a shame reproductions of these aren’t available in their full resolution and glory.

Reprints of these would be awesome…

The form, the color, the simplicity of the line and form, the harmonic compositions … These posters instantly bring me back the “taste” of good, honest design. Thank you for posting them.
