‘Read’ All About It

By

Herman Miller is celebrating the holiday season with its first book drive campaign. You can’t miss it—literally. Bright red Meridian bookcases are appearing at locations all over the country, including our six West Michigan facilities, participating dealerships, and more than 30 higher education campuses.

Education Solutions Director Jeff Vredevoogd came up with the idea to collect and provide books to local nonprofit organizations that want to share the gift of reading. The bookcase is part of the donation, too.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity that’s bringing together businesses, students, and faculty to create a better world for their communities,” he says.

Want to donate a book? You can make a donation to an organization, such as Better World Books, between now and December 15, 2010.

Although it’s also possible to donate books directly to your local library, I’ve discovered that those don’t necessarily make it onto the shelves. Libraries are pressed for space. They will use what little they can, sell what they can’t, and discard anything that doesn’t sell. Understaffed locations are less likely to actually want to deal with book donations since it creates more work for the employees without adding much to the actual library selection. So, it makes sense to find a distributor who actually wants the books and will get them into the hands of readers more efficiently. The best books to donate to libraries are generally new bestsellers that you have bought, read, and don’t want to keep. Those are in high demand among library readers who can’t afford to buy new releases.
