Turn a How-not-to into a How-to

By

How-Not-To: Design a Chair
Finnish material specialists, Ore. E. Refineries, recently caught our attention with their post on the how-to website Instructables entitled, How Not To: Design a Chair. A title guaranteed to pique our interest because we think hard before we design a chair. The post is a challenge to designers to refrain from designing chairs in 2012.

The guys as at Ore. E. Refineries raise some great points, namely that there are a lot of chairs in the world. They ask us to rethink the meaning of sustainable design and suggest repairing old chairs. So why did they create a how-not-to? Wouldn’t a call to action be more powerful that a call to non-action? Engage designer to use their talents to creating “new” chairs from old chairs, or perhaps a how-to on repairing old chairs would have been useful. Positive challenges will lead to positive outcomes.

Do you agree?

We have been told that as consumers we are responsible for what is found in the stores. “There isn’t enough markets for organic foods” etc. So consumers are made to be responsible for bad design and the usage of unsustainable materials by the industry. This idea turns the tables around. Instead of blaming consumers they are blaming designers. But they are not blaming us so that we would feel guilty. Instead it makes us smile. :)

I’m wondering if the slideshow was meant to be tongue in cheek gimmick. I started chuckling by the 3rd slide showing the guy deep in thought…ruminating on how many chairs he has and how he doesn’t need any more chairs. I will say, they certainly know how to get people to click through. Knowing how to write a headline that makes people curious is what I learned from the “tutorial”.

I do like your ideas for “how to” stuff. I think a tutorial on how to refurbish an older chair to make it more ergonomic would be neat.

How about how not to design (or make) cell phones instead (or laptops or ipads for that matter). A chair, made of wood, will rot into the ground and eventually dissapear from memory. Not all chairs are made of wood, but there isn’t a single cell phone that will rot away into nothing.

Hi. Thanks for starting a talk around the subject! The reason we didn’t start a “How to renovate…fix…tune…etc” a chair is that there are already enough tutorials for such out there. The only thing missing in making such practices more normative is will power of designers to move the focus of design from products to methodologies. We suspect that in the future design will be a pedagogical practice. Here is proof that we dont need any more chairs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7s9MJMIPAM
