What Would You Do with an Eames Chair?

By

Eames molded plastic chairs have long been a canvas for artists. Which is just what a public library in Augusta, Georgia, decided to do with a large collection of the chairs that used to be in the auditorium.

The Augusta Richmond Library has challenged local artists to decorate the chairs, which will be auctioned off in October to raise money for a new library being built. It will be interesting to see what the artists do.

What would you do if you were given an Eames molded plastic chair to decorate?

i WOULD DO BIG SIXTIES FLOWERCHILD FLOWERS ALL OVER IT,OR COVER IT IN HOUNDSTOOTH OR VINTAGE PLAID GRAPHIC,OR DO A PUCCI PRINT ALL OVER,WITH SOLID SILVER ON THE BACK SIDE.

i’d make a 3d perspective of a hole or cavern, that would look like when you sat you could actually fall into that space

I would cover the chair with lace doillies!

Frankly, I would be unable to “decorate” an Eames chair. They are absolutely perfect as they were designed.

The only exception I could possibly make for supporting the “decorating” of a product of any artist or designer would be with the endorsement of the artist or designer.

I would have it silver-plated, mount it on a white platform and display it as the work of art that it is.

While I agree with Nick in the perfection of the Eames Chair, in the spirit of the contest I would simply cover it in the large dot pattern and upholsterhe seat in the same. You could enhance Eames with Eames.

I would have it silver-plated, mount it on a clear lucite platform and display it as the oiece of art that it is.

I’d glue tiny crystals on to cover the entire back and in contrasting colored crystals write “Eames”.

Decorating an Eames would be like decorating the Mona Lisa!

If I had one it would get treated just like the Mona Lisa too, in that you can look at it all you want, but don’t sit on it.

I would paint it turquoise (the color for ovarian cancer awareness) and auction it off in an effort to raise money for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. My mother died from ovarian cancer after being misdiagnosed 3 times … if my chair could save one life, it would be a tremendous accomplishment.

I’d paint it with a heritage cherry sunburst scheme like an old Les Paul guitar

I would turn the seating surface into an operable “lite-brite”surface. Therefore providing another layer of “mass-customization”.

For a good cause : ok

But if it tigers a trend of “reclaimed” chairs that someone will desecrate for profit: no way Jose ! Don’t let this become the next ” cool thing ”

Respects this masterpieces of human design

sit in it.

i’m not sure i’d do anything with an eames chair. they are perfect the way they are!

Not much as the design speaks for itself – just add a small pillow in an Eames fabric for extra color and punch – or maybe just the Eames bird motif :)

I think I would knit a sweater for it a la yarn bombers around the world!

I always thought that it would be great painted with the dot pattern done by Ray Eames.
