Come join us at ABC Carpet & Home (888 Broadway) tonight for an evening with Eames Demetrios (who coincidentally just droppped by the booth. He must have felt his ears burning). Eames will be hosting a conversation with local New York designers. They’ll be talking about what it means to be a “good local” designer drawing on the legendary design concepts pioneered by his grandparents – Charles and Ray Eames.
Above is Eames (second from the left) with Marg Mojzak, Mark Schurman and Gregg VanderKooi all from Herman Miller.

Andrew Furmanski of Studio 96 just dropped by to admire the new Nelson pieces. He’s looking for a side table for his new media room. His suggestion? Why not cut a Nelson Bench in half. The metal legs are lightweight enough so they don’t weigh down a shorter top. Interesting idea. How would you customize the bench?

ICFF is part of New York Design Week – a whole 7 days devoted to all things design. NoHo Design District blossomed this year, sprouting up just north of SoHo (hence the name!). Very convenient for feet made weary from a long morning at the Javits Centre.
Future Perfect on Great Jones has some beautiful work including new lights from Lindsey Adelman. Look out for an interview in the next week or two highlighting Lindsey’s Brooklyn workspace.

And, of course, you can’t ‘do’ SoHo without stopping in at Moss Gallery. Murray Moss never disappoints. His show this year is called Poetic License and includes some very cool pieces by Maarten Baas – including a charred Eames molded plywood splint. I asked about the splint and it sold for $38,000. It’s part of Baas’ coveted “Where there’s smoke…” series.

Well, maybe that is a slight exaggeration. What we have done is place our ad on one of the electronic billboards in Times Square – the one above Toys “R” Us in case you were wondering. Maybe next year we can get everyone sitting in Eames chairs instead of the metal cafe chairs that populate the square now. Just a thought!

While all the action may seem to be centered squarely on New York there are a number of online events all of you can participate in. Check out the George Nelson 5-drawer cabinet with door that we are auctioning off on EBAY. It’s sitting at $475 right now.
Also on EBAY you’ll find Operation Design’s painted Eames molded plywood chairs. I spotted them in the window at Barneys last night and if I can just find the right cord I can get the pics off my camera and onto the blog! (If anyone is here at ICFF with a cord that links a Canon camera to a Mac feel free to stop by.)

That’s the question lots of people are asking. There’s the George Nelson Basic Cabinet Series which we posted on earlier this week. There’s also Klein Reid’s elegant new lamp. They designed it just for the booth but with all the attention it’s receiving who knows where the walnut-based piece may end up! What do you think? A new addition perhaps to Herman Miller’s product offer?

It’s getting busier and buzzier now that the Fair is officially open. Janel Laban, executive editor of Apartment Therapy just dropped by…it’s going to be a day of interesting meetings!
I also wanted to let you know about a giveaway we’re doing. We’ve got 4 sets of Klein Reid spinning tops to giveaway (we’ll give one set a day). All you need to do is pop in and write a comment on the Creativity clouds (and leave your card for the draw). How would you make a better world?

ICFF kicks of this morning. The Javits Centre is brimming with activity right now as last minute tweaks are made to booths all over the floor. I’ve just had a wander around and there’s some great work here…of course, there’s our Herman Miller stand which is a calm oasis of blue. I’m working at a lovely Sense desk (what’s not to like about walnut!) and I’m seated in an Embody chair (which is so far superior to my home office chair I may have to switch). More soon…

“Funny we should even call the inclusion of a blue/white digital readout an “extra” feature, but surely it is – after all, the Tivoli line has been known for the longest time as one of the simplest devices out there. Especially for those looking for a good AM/FM radio, you didn’t have to look too far for good design and technology. Today, we present to you… the Model 10.
The Model 10 manages to maintain its “Tivoli chicness” (if there exists such a thing) – including 7 different finishes including limited edition faux-aluminum models for those who want to separate themselves from the rest. Otherwise, you get the same great hardware accompanied with a number of new features.
Among them is an alarm clock with an adjustable equalization system that lets the listener set his or her own preferences for treble, bass, loudness and balance. All controls are accessible with either the top-mounted rotary dial or by a remote and all functions are readable on the new backlit LCD display/menu screen. The 10 also carries an auxiliary input for CD, MP3 players and iPhones/iPods and a DC input (just in case you were thinking about taking it mobile).
The new radio, which will sell in the U.S. at $200 and be available with an optional matching stereo speaker and overpriced iPod dock ($120). The units appear very similar to the company’s NetWorks Internet radio system, but its chassis is slightly smaller.
