A Desk of One’s Own

By

bedroomoffice

This story over at Apartment Therapy’s Unplgged really hit a chord this morning. We’re so obsessed with space in home offices, but what if you simply don’t have the room? I’ve been known to retire to my bedroom with the laptop – more for peace of mind than anything else! When I shared an apartment with a friend in New York (many years ago now) I spent hours writing from my bed just like Emily in the photograph above (she is Unplgged managing editor Gregory Han’s ‘better half”). So what do you do? Gregory offers a great practical round-up of small desks (check out the cool bentwood tables from Offi and the amazing little laptop trays from Logitech.) Let me know if you’ve got a small desk to add to this list.

It’s important to separate home and office.

To often there is so much overlap and everything can suffer but its tough with such limited space.

I like to work remotely at least once a week and keep the laptop out of the bedroom.

Hey Timothy,
Interesting – I’m working on a story about working remotely and finding the right balance. I also work remotely at least once a week…at a cafe! Where do you go?

Hi! Emily here. I thought I’d mention that my laptop and I actually move around during the day. Like the cats, I go where the sun is — bed in the morning and couch in the afternoon. :)

I think we tend to think of work as being only behind a computer (at least I always used to think that), but some of my best work has come from taking a notepad to a quiet place like the park or taking the time to do lunch/coffee breaks with great like minded people who can inspire you.

I definitely like to mix up my work environments when I’m away from the desk – keeps me sane.

Cafes can be awesome environments but LA really falls short in this department.

Hey Emily
Thanks for getting in contact. I so related to that photo of you! I do the same thing…my office gets no direct light so I shift around to the living room in the afternoon which is lovely and sunny.
