Design Pioneer: Gilbert Rohde

This month, Gilbert Rohde, Herman Miller’s first director of design joins the ranks of Raymond Loewy, Henry Dreyfuss, and Eliot Noyes, as one of twelve industrial designers honored by United States Post Office with a series of stamps showcasing the pioneers of American Design. For more on Rohde check out David Foster’s post on Discover.

When I was a kid, I actually won first place in a stamp designing contest with the theme of “letter writing”. Only the person who won the grand prize actually got their design made into a U.S. postage stamp, but mine was the design that got featured in the Dallas Morning News in the article about the contest. I guess I’ll have to keep designing to finally join the ranks of guys like Noyes and Rhode someday.
