Happy Birthday: Charles Eames
Charles Eames was born on June 17, 1907, which would make today his 104th birthday. He and his wife Ray were valued members of the Herman Miller family. You can read about our collaboration with them here. In 2009 Eames Demetrios celebrated his grandfather’s birthday with a TED talk. It’s a pleasure to share the talk with you today. Happy Birthday Charles!

Cerentha, Charles Eames was born in 1907. Doesn’t that mean this would have been his 104th birthday ?
I grew up sitting in his molded plywood dining chairs and I still have them. (In fact I recently sent them to Herman Miller to have the rubber gaskets replaced.) They’re such early ones that they have black wrought iron bases, which I love. But gawd help you if you want to sit in them in any other way than all the way back against the lumbar support !
As a teenager I was exposed to the films my first year at college…..multi-screen was so exciting, as was the Eames’ confidence in the perceptive abilities of their audience. They taught me to open my mind and use my brain in a more interesting way. I was taken to their house to meet them when I was 19, and when I moved to Venice I lived around the corner from their studio, where they still worked every day. Their influence has permeated my life, and for that I am truly grateful.
