It's fascinating to learn that Alain de Botton did this. I wrote a big chunk of my doctoral thesis at Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

I loved it. It was invigorating beyond measure to abandon my little writer tank for big spaces, big planes, big windows on open skies, and throngs of people setting off on adventures.

What's wrong with blondes looking away from us? If they were looking at us, we'd see their faces and all thoughts would go toward whether or not we want to buy HER book. Without the face, we can decide whether or not we want to buy THE book which is now about the following: "What is that sexy, beautiful blonde thinking about while she's bored at work? Or, "Ah, the Architecture of Happiness! But, of course, the architecture of face and body of a sexy beautiful blonde." Both do what book covers are supposed to do: give you a visceral (read: not cerebral) reason for buying the book. What happens after that, they (the publishing industry components and, maybe, Mr. de Botton, though I would hope not) don't really care. I confess to only reading Mr. de Botton's "How Proust Can Change Your Life" (I liked it very (very) much) and "Consolations of Philosophy (slightly less so). I've been reluctant to read his more recent work for fear that he has become a sort of Malcolm Gladwell of philosophy, that is, good at spinning a weightless book out of a single idea. I suppose now I should read one or both of the above books by Mr. de Botton. I hope I'm wrong. I dislike the Gladwell scheme intensely.

I hadn't noticed that but you are right - both blondes on the cover of Botton's books are looking away from us.
Have you read the books?
