Ideal Live/Work Space: David Sieren from The Post Family

By

“After evaluating my current live/work space, I decided to re-think the most problematic (and most fundamental) area I deal with on a day-to-day basis: my desk. The proposed solution is a simple, multi-tiered sliding work surface that can accommodate a variety of dramatically different working styles, a litany of projects in various stages of development and mundane day-to-day activities – all while retaining the ability to completely disappear when not in use.”

David Sieren is a graphic designer and member of the Post Family.

Though clever, this seems space INeffective on the other side of the wall, where you must have 2-3 feet of clear space to allow the sliding desktop to recede. Also, how do you maintain the proper desk height if you allow for vertical clearance between the three tops? What about a folding/rolling solution where the desktop rolls into the wall but is somehow able to stay rigid enough to serve as a desktop?

Without wishing to put a dampener on the designer’s enthusiasm, this reminds me of the “shared” desk between the two very narrow offices in Terry Gilliam’s film “Brazil”.

Agreed that in most spaces, there would indeed be an issue with clear space on the other side. However in my current location, the other side is an already unusable crawl space – this is definitely a solution tailored to me.

As far as height is concerned, a drafting chair base – typical of many home studios (not sure about typical office setups) – adjusts to accommodate the fluctuation quite well.

The beauty of the concept is the notion of stashing projects currently in progress without having to wipe the desktop slate clean when switching gears. A rolling surface is a nice idea, but it would defeat the purpose. There’s got to be another way to make this work for the masses. Any ID / architecture talent out there want to take a stab?

Now I’m going back to watching Brazil – I’ve got to find out what other ideas I’ve been ripping off lately.
