Yesterday would have been Charles Eames’ 105th birthday. Let’s celebrate the man who, together with his wife Ray, gave the 20th century much of its distinctive shape and helped set the foundation of modern design. Happy birthday, Charles — here’s six ways to you.

1. “100 Quotes by Charles Eames” An engaging compendium of quotations from Charles Eames compiled by the Eames Office with Herman Miller to celebrate his centennial year in 2007. Culled from articles, books, films, and more, it’s presented in seven languages, illustrating the global reach of the Herman Miller community. Read up on it at the Eames Gallery.

2. Eames Elephant The original Eames Elephants were designed as toys and constructed from molded plywood. Because of their complexity, the Eameses never put them into production; today, you can enjoy the iconic design produced in polypropylene and available in five colors. Get one at DWR.

3. Eames Lounge Chair Exploded Print Like the exploded sculpture included in the golden anniversary exhibition of the Eames Lounge Chair, this exploded print of the legendary design details its unique construction from veneer to cushions to shock mounts. Get yours at the Eames Gallery.

4. “Convertible, Version One and Two (For Charles Eames),” The Vandermark 5 Two tracks from the album “A Discontinuous Line” by “post bop” jazz group Vandermark 5 are dedicated to Charles Eames himself. Hear them now at Amazon.

5. Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair with Wood Base Time Magazine called this chair the best design of the 20th century. Constructed from plywood molded to fit the contours of the human body, it’s available in five veneers and the striking red aniline stain. Get one at Herman Miller.

6. The Films of Charles and Ray Eames Starting in the early 1950s, the Eameses created over 85 films covering a broad range of the subjects that fascinated them. The set of six volumes includes “Tops,” “Powers of Ten,” and more. Get it at Amazon.

Bonus: Eames Foundation Membership The Eames Foundation was established in 2004 to preserve and protect the iconic home of Charles and Ray Eames as well as to provide educational experiences that celebrate their legacy. With a foundation membership, you can enjoy the privilege of visiting the Eames House and the reward of helping to ensure its survival for generations to come. Join the foundation today.

“The photographer who took this shot and the designer and homeowner who organized the room either deliberately or unconsciously recognized a connection between the work of Charles and Ray Eames and the work of Mies Van Der Rohe. On one side of the desk is the Eames Soft Pad Chair, introduced in 1969. On the other side of the desk is a Mies Van Der Rohe Brno chair, introduced in 1930. Both fit well in this very contemporary 2011 interior, because the designers worked with similar ideas in mind. One of the ideas was expressed by Charles Eames who liked to reference this Mies Van Der Rohe quote, ‘I don’t want to be interesting, I want to be good.’ Here’s to that kind of goodness.”

Where we’ve been this week…

1. Creonomy I have no idea what Creonomy means (no entry found on the online dictionary). But it’s a very cool graphics/design/interesting and quirky stuff blog by Corrado Alesso and Nicolo Borghi. Creonomy is the name of their company. It’s a “small startup creating easy-to-use web-based collaboration software for the creative community. We love the work of web, graphic and logo designers and we want to develop software to make their life easier.” No idea what they actually do but I love their work! Where to start: The interview with publisher Charlotte and Peter Fiells, who we also interviewed today.

2. Matt: Unlucky in Cards A blog from the guy who was the founding developer of WordPress, the blogging software that runs millions of sites around the world – including this one. Where to start: A great link to plants in your home office.

3. Clouds 365 Project You’ve got to love this. Clouds. Lots and lots of clouds. Cloud 365 is the work of multimedia artist Kelly DeLay. He shoots clouds each day and posts them to this site. He did it for a year and now he’s doing it for another year. And all I can say is it is the perfect place to take a break from your work. Writer’s block? Check it out. It’s just lovely. Where to start: Today.

4. I Love Typography One man’s obsession becomes yours with this blog. Japan-based John Boardley shares his passion for type…yep, type. Check it out and you’ll get it. Where to start: The origins of abc.

5. GOOD What is GOOD? One of those slightly annoying media phenomenons that is hard to pin down. It describes itself as an “integrated media platform for people who want to live well and do good. We are a company and community for the people, businesses, and NGOs moving the world forward. GOOD’s mission is to provide content, experiences, and utilities to serve this community.” Sounds good, no? They’ve got a website and a magazine. Where to start: An excellent piece by Alissa Walker on women in industrial design.

The current Herman Miller showroom in Los Angeles is a beautiful space and this year it won an LEED CI Platinum certification—the first building of its kind in this city to receive this accolade. It also marks 60 years of Herman Miller’s participation in the LA design scene. To see where it all began head over to our sister blog, Discover. Charles Eames and architect Kenneth Acker met the challenge of designing the original showroom in 1946. Discover’s editors collaborated with the Eames Office to put together a great slideshow of the original space – many of the images haven’t been seen before. It’s really impressive.

We think of Charles Eames as a great designer but an exhibition that opened last night shows us another side to this talented man – that of photographer. Hosted by Smart Furniture in their Chattanooga, TN showroom a show of 100 photographs by Charles runs until March 4.

It was a rather cold evening last night but over 200 design enthusiasts showed up to hear Eames Demetrios talk about Charles and Ray’s design philosophy and enjoy the images. Many of the shots, which cover not just Charles’ work but also his travels and life with Ray, had never been exhibited before. I’m going to see if I can get a slideshow together of at least 20 of the images to post here. But for the moment I can tantalize you with pics of the show before the guests arrived!
