There’s a lot of inspiration to be found in this recent post by Apartment Therapy Tech exploring a host of shared creative workspaces. “Optimized for collaboration, these studios are proof that collectively we can create something greater than ourselves,” states contributor Chris Perez. “The mix of individuality and expression in these spaces is visceral, inspiring — just looking at them encourages you to create something.” We couldn’t agree more. Here are several that caught our eye.

Shared office space in Atwater Village, Los Angeles, CA

A group of like-minded creatives (a photographer, videographers, graphic designers, and a DJ) call this loft studio in LA their work home. With its “mid-century modern meets the desert” style, it features a brightly-hued array of designs by Charles and Ray Eames, such as their Molded Plastic and Molded Plywood Chairs. When she’s not working in midtown Manhattan, book cover designer and lifestyle blogger Anna Dorfman splits her time between two places (and, consequently, two work spaces): one in a small rental apartment in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn, and the other in the city of Newburgh in upstate New York, where she’s slowly renovating an 1891 Victorian row house she shares with her husband Evan and two dogs, Bruno and Fritz. (You can see the home’s progress regularly on her blog, Door Sixteen.) Get a glimpse of both home offices (as well as Anna’s growing Eames collection) in this quick tour.

Tell us about yourself: what you’re passionate about, what inspires you, and where you’re going. I’m inspired by people who roll with the punches and who aren’t afraid to constantly reevaluate where they are in life and where they’re headed. The older I get, the less I worry about making plans or setting goals for myself, and the more I focus on making sure I’m happy and comfortable with where I am right now. Working in the book publishing industry right now means having to constantly adapt my skills as a designer to constantly-evolving formats. Ultimately, my job is to get people to read more books — whether that means a printed volume on a shelf or something that’s downloaded to an iPad. My heart will always lie with the physical, printed book format, but I’m also excited to see where we’re headed in the world of digital publishing.

How are your spaces set up? Where do you do most of your work? And what would you change if you could? I work for a publishing company in an office building all week long at my 9-to-5 job, so I don’t have a lot of control over my primary workspace. Fortunately, my department is set up in a big, open space surrounded by windows overlooking midtown Manhattan — I think I’d have a hard time being shut in an office or sitting in a cubicle all day.

If I’m being honest, most of my freelance work and blogging time happens on the sofa. I have a desk set up in the apartment that doubles as a dining table, but I seldom sit there unless I really have to concentrate and do a lot of writing. At the house, we have an office set up that doubles as a recording studio for my husband, a technologist and musician. The desk is made from my father’s old drawing table, and sitting at it to work always feels very special.

As I get older, my back doesn’t really appreciate how much time I spend working on the sofa, so I really need to be better about working at a proper desk! The one thing I can’t do is work amongst clutter. I know a lot of artists and designers like to be surrounded by inspirational images, but I find that kind of stuff distracting — aside from my computer, I really just want a notepad, a glass of water, and maybe a dog or two nearby.

You have several pieces by Charles and Ray Eames. Why did you choose them? I’ve been collecting vintage Eames shell and wire chairs since we bought our house — there’s an embarrassing number of them stacked up in our basement. They really do look great in old houses! I love the contrast between the ornate Victorian details of our house and the smooth, rounded curves of the shell chairs. I’m always on the lookout for new (old) Eames chairs to bring home and rehabilitate. They’re classics, and they go with everything. They’ll never go out of style.

Aside from the vintage Eames chairs, we also have a large Eames Storage Unit (ESU) in our dining room. It holds everything — extra cups and plates, candle holders, placemats, cookbooks, our telephone, magazines, tools, office supplies, you name it. And, of course, we have a couple of Eames Hang-It-Alls, which truly do function as their name promises.

Do you have other Herman Miller pieces? At my day job, I sit in an Aeron chair for hours on end. The Aeron really has become the gold standard among ergonomic office chairs, and for good reason. As someone with various joint and nerve issues, I can’t say enough good things about what a difference it has made in terms of comfort in my daily life.

It’s hard not to smile when you come across a space like this one in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Thoughtfully designed and packed with vibrant color, the small studio apartment — a cozy 335 square feet — includes a collection of vintage and modern lighting, artwork, Soviet-era pottery, and pieces by Charles and Ray Eames, old and new. Take a look to see how its owner, Rustam Babayev, creates harmony in one room that must be all things: workspace, living room, kitchen, and bedroom.

Rustum’s biggest indulgence: his vintage Eames Molded Armchair from the early 1950s.

Design can be as playful as it is functional. For kids as well as the kid in all of us, here’s six ways to fill the playroom with fun and design.

1. Eames Elephant, Charles & Ray Eames – Fascinating to the Eameses, elephants popped up in Charles’ photos of circus life. Designed as molded plywood toys but never produced, the enchanting Eames Elephant comes back to life in durable polypropylene. Available in five colors. Get one at DWR.

2. Magis Puppy, Eero Aarnio – With its minimal, modern shape and detail, Aarnio’s brightly colored Puppy draws the eyes, of children especially, while simultaneously blurring the line between toy and furnishing. Leash one up at Hive Modern.

3. Eames House Blocks – The Eameses moved into Case Study House No. 8 on Christmas Eve, 1949. Now your children can enjoy building their own Eames House with these hand-pulled, screen-printed blocks. (Maybe even on Christmas Eve!) The set includes both the house and studio, comprised of 36 Michigan-grown, basswood blocks. Start building at House Industries.

4. Eames Hang-It-All, Charles & Ray Eames – Like so much of the Eameses work, the Hang-It-All is a beguiling work of art that also possesses great functionality. With its colorful wood knobs and web-like wire lattice base, it will make hanging just about anything from coats and scarves to hats and umbrellas a delight. Hang your hat on one at Herman Miller.

5. Cubebots, David Weeks – At rest, the Cubebot is an unassuming wood block; but awaken one and discover his dynamic profiles and poses. Elastic “muscles” and sustainably harvested cherry wood limbs make him impervious to years of play — the perfect, environmentally conscious, robot companion. Obtain him at Unica Home.

6. Alma Stacking Children’s Chair by Magis – Designed by Javier Mariscal for Magis, this contemporary stacking chair is the perfect height for manning a front-yard lemonade stand, a baby-doll tea service, and more. Produced in rotational-moulded polyethylene for durability with a unique sprouting chairback detail, it’s an attractive, functional addition to any playroom. Stack them up at Emmo Home.

Take a listen at their latest collaboration: this week’s Playlist.

What do you listen to while you work?
Leslie Roeder: The Byrds, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Calexico, Serge Gainsbourg, Wilco, Beastie Boys…

John Eric Byers (JEB): Cat Power, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Black Angels, Black Mountain Grinderman, My Morning Jacket, Bob Dylan, Black Keys, Wooden Ships, Walkmen, and, of course, Leslie’s playlist.

How do you listen?
Leslie: I use Urbanears Headphones or listen to iTunes directly from my laptop.

JEB: An Apple iPod Shuffle.

Do you have any favorite music websites/providers?
Leslie: No, I don’t have any favorites. I count on my friends for music recommendations. And we sometimes share our music through Dropbox.

JEB: Friends and Pitchfork to discover and Dropbox and Amazon together.

Does music influence your work?
Leslie: I think music influences my work indirectly. It helps me take my mind off the news, day-to-day issues, and politics etc. I turn on my music to focus on my work. Otherwise, my head spins all day long. So, in that way, it influences how I work. I am more productive when I listen to music.

JEB: It doesn’t directly influence my work, but it sets the pace and groove of the process and the process sets the pace and groove of the playlist.

Where do you find music recommendations? Who influences your musical taste?
Leslie: My music recommendations come from my friends. For instance, one of my closest friends brought Harry Nilsson to my attention. My musical taste is really influenced by my boyfriends. (That is very embarrassing to admit, but it is true.) Before that, my brother, who is a country music and folk music musician, influenced my musical taste, so I guess there’s a pattern there. As a youth, I listened to Emmy Lou Harris, Dolly Parton, Graham Parsons, and all the musicians in the genre. My friend and Goodjoy partner John Eric Byers listens to The Byrds, Nick Cave, The Black Keys, Cat Power, and a whole lot more. Those musicians definitely grew on me.

What song or artist best represents the work you create?
Leslie: Hmm, a bit of Serge Gainsbourg, a bit of Leonard Cohen, a bit of Frank Zappa — and maybe some Marianne Faithful mixed in.

JEB: It’s all a mixed bag.

Ideal place to sit and listen to your playlist:
Leslie: The Nelson Platform Bench. A bench is a community space. It represents a space for several people — a shared space, a public space. Many people can occupy a bench. Music should be shared, and a bench is perfect for creating the opportunity. And I totally see Neil Young sitting on a bench. It’s austere and represents equality.

JEB: An Eames Molded Plastic Armchair with 4-leg Base in wafer and an Eames Molded Plastic Armchair with Wire Base in orange. My 4-legged wafer shell chair because, while it is hard, I find it to be very relaxing to sit in. I cannot imagine listening to my playlist while relaxing in an upholstered chair.

GOODJOY DESIGN’S PLAYLIST

Leslie:

1. Dear Heather, Leonard Cohen
A sunny view and her grandparents’ original Eames Wire Chair help make the Brooklyn-based home office of photographer-turned-designer Jennifer Levy both cheerful and meaningful. Check out the bright workspace — which simultaneously serves as the headquarters of her interior design firm CAVdesign and an occasional guest room — in this quick tour.

Tell us about CAVdesign: How it started, what you’re passionate about, and where you’re going. I started CAVdesign after a long career as a photographer (which I still do for special clients). As a serial renovator, I always enjoyed re-working my spaces and finally decided to do it professionally. I absolutely love the combination of working with people, hunting down design bargains, and even the inevitable struggles of the renovation process. I find it rewarding to craft a new environment, and I believe that the environments we create tell our stories. I really enjoy helping my clients find the “voice” for their spaces, while being mindful of satisfying practical needs like storage, a comfy corner for reading, and child-friendly furnishings and fabrics. I’m also expanding into two areas: Design Education and products. I’ve been working on a series of e-books called “The Design Coach Series” to help people get the most of their own renovations and design projects, and I have a wall-covering product in the works as well.

What inspires you? In addition to architects like Mies Van der Rohe and interior designers (Frank Roop, Laura Bohn, Brad Ford), I’m inspired by old machinery, shells and plants, Asian graphics, and designers like Charles and Ray Eames, who had a freedom and playfulness behind their work. (We have an Eames Hang-It-All in our entry and it always makes me smile, which is pretty good for a hook!)

Tell us about your workspace. Any special considerations that affected the way it’s set up? What do you like or dislike? The office also serves as a guest room (thanks to a Murphy Bed), which is quite a challenge given its size. I used a tall storage piece to maximize the space and still leave clearance for the bed to fold down, but I’m definitely running out of space for samples and fabrics! I usually work with one other person here, so I needed a second desk area, which I created by wrapping the desk (made out of doors) along two walls. The best things about my office are the view — a south-facing backyard of trees — and the curtains, which are very cheerful and Scandinavian-looking.

Your office has two Herman Miller pieces: an Eames Wire Chair and an Aeron. Why did you select them? I was lucky to have grandparents with good taste and a few original mid-century pieces, including the Eames Wire Chair that I use in my office, and I often think of my costume-designer grandmother (Olga – very German) as my original design inspiration. I keep her picture of her in the office as a reminder of her great taste and DIY spirit (she sewed all her slipcovers). I love the base of the chair and the fact that it swivels (I think it was the only swivel chair the Eames’ designed) and the contrast of the metal grid. A sheepskin makes it comfortable even for long stretches.

When I expanded to a second seating area, I needed another chair: the Aeron. It’s simply the most comfortable office chair I have ever sat in. I had also been experiencing shoulder pain from working on the computer and using the Aeron, combined with lowering my desk height, helped clear that right up.

What does the Los Angeles County Museum of Art do when they need a vintage Eames Hang it All for their California Design: Living in A Modern Way exhibition? Head straight to Daniel Ostroff, editor of EamesDesigns.com, Hollywood producer and design scholar, who sources not only a vintage piece but finds it in its original box. LACMA’s request didn’t come out of the blue - in the past year San Francisco’s MOMA, Yale and the Indianapolis Museum of Art have consulted with Ostroff for design scholarship.

“When LACMA announced that they were doing a California design exhibition which overlapped with my area of focus in studying applied art I looked for ways to assist the show’s curators – my friends Wendy Kaplan, Bobbye Tigerman and Bill Stern,” says Ostroff. “With regard to Eames designs I appreciated how selective they were. They had already sourced an Eames surfboard coffee table from Joel and Margaret Chen who have been generous supporters and donors to LACMA at a very high level.”

The Chen’s Collecting Eames show which we wrote about here on Lifework is another Pacific Standard Time exhibition – this time devoted entirely to Ray and Charles Eames’ extraordinary body of work. It was the Chen’s who had the Hang It All in their extensive collection. “Connecting Bobbye and Wendy and Bill with Joel Chen was easy – we all know one another.”

Chen let the LACMA curators choose and they picked the one in the original box from the first year of production. “It is the only precisely dated example because it comes with its original box postmarked first year of production,” says Ostroff. “Plus the Eames Office designed the box and label. This is “new old stock” as the original buyer never used it.”

This is the last of our contributor’s gift guides. Jordan Awan, who is an art director at The New Yorker, and a valued member of the Lifework team, reveals his wish list.

During the holidays, this sturdy Stanley Flask ($20) should never leave your inside coat pocket. Rust and leak proof, it’s as aesthetically pleasing as it is practical; use it to make holiday travel bearable, or simply to enjoy an extra dose of winter cheer. Order one from DWR or head to the wonderful Brook Farm General Store in Brooklyn.

Playful and beautiful, the Eames Hang-It-All ($179) has become an essential part of both my apartment decor and my daily routine: it’s always my last stop on my way out the door and my first when I return. The Hang-It-All really does hang it all; pile on bags, coats, scarves, sweaters, hats, and anything else (if you can bear to cover it up, that is!) Designed in 1953 by Charles and Ray Eames, it’s available from the Herman Miller Store.

M&Co.’s Bodoni watch ($105) is, to me, the Platonic ideal of a watch. Designed by Tibor Kalman in 1984, it’s lightweight, comfortable, and has a perfectly proportioned face which elegantly shows off the understated Bodoni numbers. It’s as timeless as a timepiece can get. Buy it from MoMA and show your good taste.

Designed in 1951, Isamu Noguchi’s Akari table lamps ($145) are functional sculptures that look at home in any setting. The soft glow they emit is an easy way to warm up a room on a cold winter night. Buy them from MoMA or the Noguchi Museum in New York; otherwise check out all the beautiful lamps for sale in the Akari Store.

Hillside makes heirloom-quality scarves ($80); no matter how light my jacket is, on a cold day my scarf keeps me toasty. If you live in New York, head to In God We Trust for the best selection; if not, check out Hickorees, but do it quickly, before they sell out.

With Thanksgiving safely behind us we begin to looking forward to the rest of the holidays. This year Hannukah starts early – December 1 to be exact. So we’re going to start our gift guide early too! I asked five Lifework contributors to put together their wish lists for the holidays. Here is Heather’s and as you’d expect it has a particularly foodie bent. Look out tomorrow for Brian Greene’s list. If you’re shopping for Christmas this will certainly give you lots of time to get inspired before the rush sets in.

Happy Holidays!

Cerentha

(PS – don’t forget the Herman Miller holiday event runs until December 13. We are offering 15% off selected items and a fast ship service.)

The very best gifts to give are the ones you’d like to receive. And so I hope my husband is reading about all the lovely generous gifts I want to give, hint hint. But seriously, my gifty picks center around what is in fact my very, very favorite part of the holiday season: parties! So whether you’re the cooking in the kitchen or decking the halls, here are a few must-haves for making the seasonal scene.

1. WMF Profi-Plus Stainless Steel Ball Whisk, $30 at MoMa Unlike many kitchen utensils that rate high in looks, this one actually works. It has become my absolute favorite whisk, particularly when it comes to cleanup as there are no crevices for food to get stuck in. Also, the design means that the ball rods can generate more whipping action using less effort. It’s in heavy rotation in my kitchen and on my gift list.

2. Muji Water-Repellent Apron, $22.95 Can we talk about how totally chic this Japanese apron is? I love all things Muji for simplicity of design, and this apron is no exception. Perfect for the hostess on your list—you know, the one who actually cooks and looks good doing it.

3. Vange’s Desile Folding Chair, $335 It seems like I’ve been on the hunt for good folding chairs for a very long time. This bamboo eco-friendly version is the holy grail of folding chairs. Cut from a single 20mm slice of board, when closed, the chair is pancake flat (100 chairs = 2 linear meters).

4. Lanvin Crystal-Embedded Suede Ballerina Flats, $770 Good taste starts with shoes, and I love Lanvin’s update on the classic ballerina with this flirty little Swarovski crystal bow. To stay on your toes for the month of merrymaking ahead, forgo the heels and slip into something more comfortable.

5. Eames Hang It All, $179 I’ve been wanting this Eames Hang It All FOREVER! And this year I’ve found a way to give AND receive. I’m wrapping it up and putting it under the tree for my toddler who will love the colorful hooks. As parents, we make sacrifices…

6. Heath Ceramics Winter Scarlet Dip Bud Vase Set, $110 A friend once said she was suspect of those who seasonally decorate—and while I think she was talking gourds on mantles and lawn ornaments, I have to believe she would make exception for Heath’s seasonal bud vase set in seductive suede red, ruby red and linen white.
