The Pop Up Shop’s Grand Finale

The Herman Miller Pop Up Shop officially closed its doors in New York City late yesterday afternoon — but not without a little fanfare first. On the evening of Friday, June 29, House Industries type foundry and Metropolis magazine joined us to throw an after-work finale party to say one last goodbye to the big city.

In addition to general merrymaking, Metropolis paid tribute to the of relaunch Alexander Girard’s textiles. House Industries displayed artwork and artifacts from its various Herman Miller, Eames, and Girard projects, and brought along one of the most popular events of the night: a mobile screen-printing rig from the Awesome Dudes print shop. Guests kept the line long for the chance to have the Dudes print one of several custom House Industries screen designs (or combo thereof) on a complimentary canvas tote.

Thanks to those who attended the celebration, and thanks to everyone who stopped by our temporary shop in Soho during its nearly two-month run. Here’s hoping you had as much fun as we did.

Check out Emily Pilloton’s Design Revolution Road Show. The exhibition is held in a refurbished Airstream and covers design that empowers people. There’s a great interview with Emily inside the trailer on Metropolis’ site. Yves Behar, who designed the Leaf and Ardea lights for Herman Miller, has two pieces included in the exhibition – his XO laptop and Y Water (the bottles double as children’s blocks).

For all you designers and would-be designers this is a great opportunity. Metropolis Magazine Next Generation design competition is all about today and tomorrow. They are “looking for ONE design fix you can make now… in the products you use, your home, your workplace, your city, or any commercial application—that, in scale or as inspiration, can improve our future.”

Sounds intriguing doesn’t it? We can’t wait to see the results. And if you want to be part of it you’ve got until January 29th to get your ‘fix’ in.
