In this week’s “Why Design” series from Herman Miller, Don Chadwick discusses the camera and how it’s helped guide his eye, allowing him to see things differently. Chadwick’s unique view of the world has allowed him to redefine it with design.
His Aeron Chair is the perfect example. It introduced a completely new kind of task seating, eschewing traditional upholstery for form-fitting Pellicle suspension, which cools and focuses while offering unmatched ergonomic comfort and support.

Lifework draws inspiration from Chadwick’s words and work in this week’s Six Ways to Photography and Design.

Jim Franco is an interiors and lifestyle photographer who also paints and makes surfaces for the prop-rental house he co-owns. And that means that his work space spreads out between two studios and the prop house itself. One studio contains his office upstairs, which allows him to shoot downstairs. The second gives him room not only to photograph, but also to drag out his saws, sanders, paint, and plaster to craft the prop surfaces. “My work spaces are either super neat or very messy,” he explains. Get a glimpse at the tidy side of his life and take as a listen to the music mix playing throughout his day. Read more

UK photographer Will Robson-Scott‘s latest work, called In Dogs We Trust, concentrates on canines and their owners. While Robson-Scott was interested in exploring the affinity owner’s have with their dogs I was drawn to the series because many of the shots cover people in their home offices. It’s well worth a look – if not for the interesting workspaces then for the wonderful dogs.

We think of Charles Eames as a great designer but an exhibition that opened last night shows us another side to this talented man – that of photographer. Hosted by Smart Furniture in their Chattanooga, TN showroom a show of 100 photographs by Charles runs until March 4.
It was a rather cold evening last night but over 200 design enthusiasts showed up to hear Eames Demetrios talk about Charles and Ray’s design philosophy and enjoy the images. Many of the shots, which cover not just Charles’ work but also his travels and life with Ray, had never been exhibited before. I’m going to see if I can get a slideshow together of at least 20 of the images to post here. But for the moment I can tantalize you with pics of the show before the guests arrived!
