I really enjoy the solitude that comes from working in my home office. I get more work done in a shorter period of time and with far fewer distractions.

Also, anther perk is not having to shave and being able to work in whatever clothes I find comfortable for the day.

When we built our house a year ago, I specifically had a room set aside for a home office and am so glad we did that. My home office is my zen place.

The biggest challenge for me as a self-employed home-based worker is balance. It’s really easy to become all-consumed with work since there are no space or time boundaries between work and life. There’s always one more email to answer before going to bed.

In contrast, it’s also easy to let the dirty dishes, unvacuumed floor, and grocery shopping that needs to be done take your focus away from work. That balance is difficult to achieve.

All that being said, I don’t miss commuting or dealing with office politics. I wouldn’t change a thing!
