What Does Your Desk Look Like?

By

Mark Frauenfelder posted this excellent film yesterday on Boing Boing. It’s by Aaron Trinder and gives you an insight into how differently we all work. For some a clean, sparse desk is essential and for others it’s a litter of papers and pictures. How do you feel about your desk? I’m in Michigan this week meeting with the Herman Miller team but when I get home I will post some pics of my new desk. We recently moved houses and converted our new garage into a home office…and playroom and spare bedroom. The desk was really important to me. In this multi-purpose space it is the one area that is truly mine. And I agree with Mark – I wish this short little film was longer.

That was a really cool movie as an artist/creative/designer. My furniture selling side gets a little scared at the notion of the desk eventually being purely a “state of mind.”

I can’t imagine desks ever going away completely…I love my workspace and it is definitely more than a state of mind, or even a computer. There is something very satisfying about creating a space to work.

This short film sums up beautifully the relationship one has with one’s desk…a private world, a reflection of the individual, a “secret landscape” of sorts. It (the video) makes me want to consider not only my desk, but the desks of my family and colleagues.

Thanks for this piece. I loved the comment about former trend of workers being nomads and the era of flexible workspaces. This has failed miserably for the company I work for. We had an entire 300 person office with flexible work space. Over time, less and less people would actually go to the office. Everyone was working from home. You lost an incredible amount of collaboration as a result and also a sense of teamwork. As a result, I don’t think desks will ever fully go away (thankfully).
