What Everyone Else Wants in an Office
In spite of the differences between nationalities, people are more alike than they are different. In almost all humans almost all genes are almost identical. Our needs for shelter have been similar, too. We gravitate toward spaces that offer wide, distant views (“prospect territory”) that let us see what’s coming, and small, secure places where we can hide from predators—or co-workers.
Thanks to this genetic memory, office design that incorporates open vistas and protective spaces may make workers around the world more effective simply by making them feel at home, even if they can’t figure out exactly why they feel that way.
