We know that learning can occur anytime and anywhere. Because students are increasingly mobile, creating compelling places for working, studying, and engaging with peers and faculty plays a key role in student success.

The phrase "informal learning space" implies agility. Informal learning spaces must be multi-purpose and support multiple group interactions.

Social

Informal learning spaces serve as the social hub of activity for students and faculty throughout campuses. Most often these spaces are created in conjunction with cafes and lounges.

Stimulating

The very nature of informal learning spaces requires a stimulating environment. Such spaces are not governed by time or specific functions, and attracting students and faculty means the space must appeal to them.

Healthful

Students will gravitate to those informal learning spaces that provide comfortable, ergonomic furniture, appropriate light levels including daylighting, and nourishment.

Resourceful

The best informal learning spaces support a variety of teaching and learning styles. Ideally, they are multiuse and flexible. Because they are often in use 24/7, these undesignated and unscheduled spaces must be particularly resourceful.

Sustainable

Because of the evolving nature of the informal learning space, incorporating elements of sustainable design creates an environment that is productive, creative, and innovative.
