Herman Miller and Rapha

Where Design Meets Performance

A bicycle sits outside the modern Eames House in Pacific Palisades, California.

From a performance work chair to a carbon-fiber road bike, we at Herman Miller love a good ride. That’s why we’ve teamed up with our friends at the cycling clothing brand Rapha to celebrate the best of performance and design. Herman Miller and Rapha are both dedicated to technical ingenuity and design innovation whether it takes the form of apparel made to endure the demands of road cycling or a piece of modern furniture that elevates everyday living.

Herman Miller and Rapha team up for a series of guided design tours by bike.

As part of our collaboration, Herman Miller and Rapha are launching the first-ever Herman Miller Design Rides—a set of curated architecture tours led by local creatives in select American cities. Each ride will be hosted in partnership with Rapha’s global network of cycling clubhouses.

Ride with Rapha

Midcentury Mecca

Put pedal to pavement in a city shaped as much by the automobile as the pleasures of surf, sand, and celebrity. Cruise down Melrose Avenue and tour L.A.’s legendary modern residences including the Schindler House and Eames House before heading to Rodeo Drive to see the Rem Koolhaas-designed Prada Store.

Exclusively Made Herman Miller Furniture

This spring, Rapha opens a new retail location in Los Angeles—and we’ve produced an exclusive set of furnishings for the occasion. Come by and enjoy the new digs, decked out with Herman Miller pieces in custom finishes and colorways, including an Eames Storage Unit featuring panels in Rapha pink.

Cycling Caps in Alexander Girard Prints

From seat to saddle, self-expression is all in the details. Material finish, pattern, and color articulate form and energize our environments. For the Herman Miller Design Rides, Rapha has produced a limited-edition riding cap featuring the vibrant, archival Triangles print by the “color-fool” Alexander Girard. The prolific midcentury designer directed Herman Miller’s textile division for more than twenty years, and said it best himself: “Art is only art if it is synonymous with living.”

Inside the Herman Miller Design Rides

In partnership with our friends at Rapha, we’re exploring America’s design hotspots from the saddles of our bikes. Check out what we found in New York, San Francisco, and Boulder.
