The allure of tiny power

Designer Tom Newhouse positively beams when illuminating the virtues of light-emitting diodes.

A desktop supports a computer, organizers, and a space-saving Tone Personal Light.

Newhouse is especially intrigued by the ramifications of their minuscule size. Though the light output is generous, the LEDs themselves are tiny. Consequently, the lamp containing them can be smaller, too. “LEDs provide a tremendous opportunity to sculpt a new form factor for a desk lamp,” he says. “We don’t have to design around big bulbs, so we can use less material and achieve an unobtrusive footprint.”

“I have been passionate on (environmental issues) for many years. That’s one reason why I love to work with Herman Miller.”
