Iterations on a chair design

Charles and Ray Eames famously revisited and improved upon their designs, both in the moment and over time.

DCM (1946): The Dining Chair Metal was developed at the same time as the wood version and used the same moulded plywood techniques the Eames Office had pioneered.

DCM-L (1970): This iteration, intended for libraries (the “L” in its name), had back legs that were ¾-inch longer for a more upright sitting posture. The longer legs then became standard on all DCM models.

EC-127 (also 1970): Informally known as the “upholstered DCM”, the EC-127 was made of reinforced plastic, which allowed for a new shock-absorbing rubber and metal mount that was stronger – an innovation that continues to be used in Eames plastic chairs today.
