Steve Frykholm, Herman Miller's Vice President of Creative Design, was named the recipient of the AIGA Fellow Award in a ceremony Thursday evening, December 14, 2006, at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. Frykholm has been with Herman Miller for 37 years, hired as the company's first internal graphic designer following his graduation from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
He is the first designer from the state of Michigan to earn the AIGA Fellow Award, a capstone to a much-decorated career for Frykholm. He oversees Herman Miller's image and identity programs and publications, which have gained numerous awards for excellence. Frykholm also inaugurated a tradition of creating playful posters for the Herman Miller Annual Picnic, and a number of those are part of the permanent collection of several museums, including New York's Museum of Modern Art.
The AIGA Fellow program recognizes designers who "have made a significant contribution to raising the standards of excellence in practice and conduct" within their field of influence. The AIGA, founded in 1914 as the American Institute for Graphic Arts, is a professional association that advances the role of design and designers.
Frykholm's AIGA Fellow Award was presented by Ric Grefe, the New York-based Executive Director of AIGA.
