Rediscovering 'Discovering Design'
February 23, 2007   [E-mail Page]  [Print Page]

Herman Miller for the Home's popular and award-winning "Discovering Design" online website has been dramatically redesigned and expanded to reflect the breadth and impact of classic modern design.

It's a not-too-extreme makeover, but, according to Dianne Garone, a senior program manager for Herman Miller for the Home, a way of reorganizing the growing content on the site and "still have fun while you're exploring and learning."

Discovering Design launched in 2004 as part of Herman Miller for the Home's efforts to educate consumers on the importance of authenticity in design and materials.

"It's educational and fun," said Marg Mojzak, director of Herman Miller for the Home. "Certainly we want to inform our visitors about our vigilance around authenticity, but it's not just on behalf of our own designs."

Indeed, the redesigned site now includes profiles of Hans Knoll and Walter Paepcke, in addition to other legendary and contemporary designers.

The most significant change on the site is the introduction of three spinning carousels--one each for People, Places and Ideas, and Products--made up of graphic icons. When users click on an icon, it halts the carousel and opens up information about that subject. All related links to that subject will be indicated by red lines.

"One of the things people really like about the site," Garone said, "are the red lines that show the connectivity of the various design icons and how many things are related to each other in so many ways."

The remodeled site also now includes a video clip of the 1956 introduction of the Eames lounge chair and ottoman on the NBC-TV Home Show hosted by Arlene Francis. "Posting videos to the site is a new feature," Garone added, noting that more videos and audio clips will be added in the future.

The Discovering Design website is at www.hermanmiller.com/discoveringdesign.
